Dennis Kuhn - Percussionist, Composer, Professor .. .. 

Dennis Kuhn was born in Olten, Switzerland. Between 1969 and 1975 he played drum-set in various groups. From 1973 to 1979 he studied at the Hochschule fuer Musik Basel where he became a member of the Basler Schlagzeugensemble, directed by the famous Maecenas for music of the 20th century, Paul Sacher... 

Starting from 1980 until 1995 he was principal timpanist and percussionist at the Mannheim Symphony Orchestra (Sinfonieorchester des Nationaltheaters, Opera Mannheim)...

In 1984 he founded the Basler Schlagzeugtrio and also joined the Deutsches Schlagzeugensemble. There he worked close with many composers, such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Wolfgang Rihm...

In 1995 he was appointed professor for percussion, timpani and ensemble at the "Staatliche Hochschule fuer Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim" (University for Music and Performing Arts Mannheim)...

With the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie he worked several times as instructor, preparing orchestral parts. He performed regular with the Ensemble Modern...

Under the direction of Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado, Roger Norrington, Pierre Boulez, Michael Gielen, Leonard Slatkin, Neeme Jaervi, Paavo Jaervi, Kristjan Jaervi and many others he performed with the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Munich Philharmonics and the Radio Symphony Orchestras of the German Broadcasting stations all over Europe, as far as Japan...

He was founder and music director of the CrossArtEnsemble, a project which includes almost all disciplines in which contemporary art and music without borders is found. With CAT the percussion trio - founded in 1996 - he performed all over Germany, Switzerland and in the year 2001 in Canada...

In 2009 and 2010 Dennis Kuhn was in jury of the first and second "International Percussion Competition of China" and "JianLi Percussion Festival". There he also has held master classes and concerts...

Since 1979 he composes for various instruments and ensembles. Besides chamber and orchestral music he is involved in electronic/digital music. Mostly performed in Europe, his music was also played in the USA, Canada and Taiwan, Qatar and China. Many compositions were commissioned by the National Theatre Mannheim for the Mannheim Ballet for small ensembles to large orchestra...

In the year 2000 he was prize-holder of a Swiss music award...
